Discord is a relatively new chat platform for phones and computers which has all the features of modern messenger apps, but with a whole lot more, from bots to custom servers. Discord initially started out as a chat application for gamers, adding lots of functionality in many games and letting your friends see what game you’re playing, but has since evolved to be a general purpose messenger. Discord is used by a wide variety of people, gamers or not, and is still growing quickly to this day!
Create your Discord account
To get yourself started with discord, you don’t even need an account, but we’ll walk you through the steps to creating a new account. First, go to discord’s site, discordapp.com. Press the ‘Open in Browser’ button in the middle of the screen, and you will be prompted to pick a username. Your username can be anything you want and can be changed at any time, so don’t worry about picking something random. Once you hit enter and fill out the Captcha, you will be brought to the Discord app page. There will be a short tutorial for new members, but to keep your account and claim it, you must click the orange ‘Claim Account’ button at the top of the page. All you need to do after is enter your email and a password you’d like, then check your email for the confirmation link. Click that link and you’ll be good to go! Your account is all yours, so go wild!
You can also note that you do not need to claim the account to use discord, but it also means that your account is temporary, and if you close your browser you can risk losing it. All the same Discord functionality is available to non-claimed accounts, but it’s always safer to claim it so you don’t lose all your chats.
